Reclaim Your Vision

July 9, 2020

Have you ever been having a really great day, in high spirits, and then for some reason your mood suddenly shifts and you're not exactly sure why?

I sure have. For me, I find that mostly happens when I've unintentionally neglected my life-vision or unknowingly allowed myself to be distracted by other people's opinions.

Here's an example of being distracted by others' opinions: Let's say I get a strong craving for French vanilla ice cream, but then my peer-group derails me and exclaims what a boring choice that is for various reasons, and pushes for sherbet as opposed to French vanilla. As a result of their strong opinions, I concede, order the sherbet, and end up disappointed because I didn't get to enjoy what I initially truly desired.

Their opinions or perspectives might have been valid for their tastes, but they were incongruent with my own and I allowed them to sway my decisions, thereby producing personal dissatisfaction in the end.

Simple lessons like that have taught me to be intentional about developing my own vision for my life and not being dissuaded from moving in the direction of that vision.

Proverbs 29:18 says,

"Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law" (ESV).

This applies to oneself just as much as it applies to a group of people. When you have a vision for your life, it'll cause you to focus your efforts and restrain the proclivity to veer off into distraction and discouragement. And if those feelings happen to come, vision helps you to get back on track! The beautiful part is that when we truly abide by this law [of vision], it produces happiness and blessing.

I love to read that verse in the Amplified translation, and view the "law" metaphysically as exercising/abiding by the principle of vision and visualization:

"Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]-blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he" (Proverbs 29:18 AMP).

When the opposite of happiness wants to linger around, remind yourself not to wallow in it (thereby magnifying and spreading all of that discouragement to others), because...

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back" (Proverbs 29:11 NKJV).

Instead, reclaim your vision. When distraction or discouragement try to knock on the door of your attention, remember you don't have to give them full ventilation by granting their access nor allowing them to stay around.

Reclaim your vision!

This reclaiming of your vision may be a continual process throughout life! But, the rewards for doing this may lead to much greater satisfaction and blessing, which will also help you to be a blessing to the world around you.
