The Good Fight of Faith

May 28, 2020

"Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses" (1 Timothy 6:12).

This passage shows us that whenever you're exercising faith in a particular area, there will likely come a point in time when your faith will be challenged. Challenges come. How we respond is the difference-maker.

Eternal life, by its nature, is not something that begins after you die. (Read that again.) If it started after you died, then it couldn't very well claim to be eternal.

The implication here is that there are eternal-life benefits that can have a present-day impact in temporal, physical life, here and now.

One of the ways we lay claim to those benefits in the here and now is by fighting the good fight of faith!

That means we are to stake our claim in the victory, and hold on to it like a bulldog, especially in the face of challenges that would suggest the very opposite of what we're believing for.

Metaphysically speaking, the "inner-mouth" of our thoughts, beliefs and feelings are constantly making "confessions" which help to shape the unfolding experiences of life. Engaging this inner-realm positively is the function of faith!

Faith is the very substance out of which what you hope for is formed. (Hebrews 11:1). But, in order for faith to produce, it must be contended for.

The good fight of faith is a winning fight; that's what makes it good! But, the fight is engaged when you repeatedly refuse to be thrown off by bluffing circumstances and negative suggestions, and instead hold your ground in the Word - the state of consciousness of you being, doing and having the good which you desire!

The gospel, or "good news" for your personal experience of life is something that you must contend for! Jude 3 is an insight into this contending. Yet, we should "contend for the faith", not simply in doctrine or religious creed, but actually in our own consciousness regarding our being, doing and having the good which we desire - especially the good which we have laid claim on within God's Word.

We must remember that not even humans are the real enemy, because "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12).

Let us SET ourselves for continual renewal in the "good news", juxtaposed to the bad, repeatedly staking our claim in the realm of faith, fighting the good fight that SEES the final victory!

"For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith" (1 John 5:4).
