We Walk By Faith

March 6, 2021

We're constantly making decisions! Do we ever stop to ask ourselves, what part of me is making this decision? Have I responsibly analyzed the facts to make good decisions? How does my intellect interplay with my spirituality? At my core, am I motivated by faith or fear? Am I healthily making use of both my head and my heart? These are questions that I wrestle with in my spiritual development in the actualizing of everyday life. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Self-introspection leads to personal growth,  so it's healthy to consider these things.

Yet, as maturing spiritual beings fulfilling our divine purpose,

"we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).

We are here to manifest divine purpose. In doing so, we want to use wisdom, take inspired action and not be overly cautious in doing so.

Being cautious has its place, but it can also get out of place. For example, it’s good to be cautious when you drive and have the mindset of driving defensively, and not overly aggressive or recklessly. However, if caution steps beyond its bounds and makes you believe that you cannot get behind a wheel at all for fear of death, then you could end up locking yourself in your house forever,  fearing to ever be on the road in a moving vehicle.

Imagine how that fear of the automobile restricted many when it was a fairly new invention in the world. Many called the automobile “the devil’s horse” or "the devil wagon". While society was advancing, many religious people thought that by participating in this phenomenon of motorized transportation, they were aiding an evil agenda; this was actually TAUGHT from some pulpits and ingested into the hearts/minds of some people. Was it GOD telling them to resist the evils of the automobile, or was it their subconscious programming that wouldn’t let them go beyond their norm or what was comfortable for them?

Automobiles were reportedly invented around 1885 and it was just in 1908 that Henry Ford released his Model T car that practically put America on the road. What we see as so common in 2021, was literally a world-shifting occurrence just about 100 years ago in the "Roaring 20s" when cars became immensely popular in the United States.

Were there risks involved in this process of creating these motor vehicles and the facilitation of their popular use in society? Yes! But, society had to advance nonetheless!

Humorously, I wonder if some religious people used the Scripture text above to support boycotting the use of cars. I can imagine someone saying: "The Good Book says we WALK by faith, not DRIVE!" Subconscious programming, backed by religious beliefs, can be difficult to shift.

What "new" paths is Spirit trying to forge in your life? Move forward in faith. Just take one step at a time, and let Spirit be your guide.
