What's All the Fuss Over the Name of Jesus?

April 16, 2021

What's all of this hype about when it comes to the Name of Jesus? Why do people in church sing songs about his Name and seem to be so emotional about it?

Well, what’s in a name? A name is just an identifying word. But, words are invisible containers. Words carry the belief and thought-images that exist in consciousness. Therefore, every name carries its own nature.

John’s Gospel shows us that Jesus Christ is the Word of God; the “Logos” is the Word which is a Name, Idea, Invisible Thought, Creative Substance, etc. It says that the

WORD became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).

But again, why is there all of this fuss over the Name of Jesus?

Did you know that the name “Jesus” was not even the original name Christ was called when he walked the earth? Scholars believe his name was actually “Yeshua”. Yet, we do translate it to “Jesus” in our current social context. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages that we get the form of that name as we know and use it today. Additionally, there were others in his time (and in the world today) with the same name.

Yet, when this Name is lifted in prayer, worship and spiritual communion, there is a Presence that is associated with it which has all the spiritual fervor and faith of thousands of years of devotion. There has accumulated great spiritual energy around this Name, simply through the healing prayer and worship that has surrounded its invocation.

It is believed that when you call the name of a thing, you are calling it forth and awakening its very essence. When someone calls my name, my attention turns to them (even if but for a moment).

When you call a NAME, you call forth its NATURE!

We all have a peculiar energy that surrounds our own name! Your name represents the energy that you carry, what you stand for and represent, as well as your reputation and legacy that you leave behind. Many emotions can be evoked just by saying a person’s name, because you bring to mind all that they have done and contributed to the world around them, and you’re reminded of the direct or indirect impact that they have made on your life.

For example: When I mention the name Louise Newman (my deceased maternal grandmother), I instantly think of grandmotherly love and feeling especially favored. I knew that I was special to her and we shared many lovely memories together.

But, when I mention the Name of Jesus,

•I think of the healings and miracles recorded in the Gospels and the Book of Acts;

•I think of the people and ministries through many generations that have refined their awareness of the ever-present reality of the Spirit of Christ and have manifested the results of that same Personality in their present day;

•I think of the spiritual treasure that is made available and offered to all, which, in my understanding of Jesus, transcends culture, religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, etc. (Even Jesus said, “I have other sheep that are not of this fold” (John 10:16) and that statement continues to mystify even the scholars.)

When I mention the name Jesus,

•I think of the unrelenting, all-inclusive, persistent love of God that redeems and perseveres beyond any curse.

•I think of the blessing of God being invoked and brought near, dear and close, in the here and now, covering and overshadowing our lives as a blanket of protection and well-being. I have experienced and continue to experience this as a reality, personally.

That’s what I see and feel when I worship and pray in the Name and Nature of Jesus.

Words carry the meaning and faith that we, as humans, give to them. Since words carry the meaning and faith that we put into them, then the mention or invocation of the Name Jesus is like a spiritual siphon drawing all of the attributes of Heaven to be at attention for access in the here and now!

“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 2:9 NKJV)

All of the virtue-giving qualities of the Names of God as revealed in the Old Testament are summed up in the name of Christ Jesus!

For example:

1. Jehovah Jireh (the God who sees and Provides) is in the Name of Jesus!

2. Jehovah Rapha (the God who Heals) is in the Name of Jesus!

3. Jehovah Nissi (the God who is my banner of Victory in conflict or battle) is in the Name of Jesus!

The Pauline Epistle declares:

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth” (Philippians 2:9-10).

The NATURE and spiritual essence behind that NAME is what we invoke when we address the realm of Spirit from this standpoint!

The power and significance is not just in the sound syllables coming out of the mouth when the Name of Jesus is uttered; instead, it is the belief, the expectation, the inner knowing of the depth of Personality and ever-present Spiritual Power that is associated with our stirring of the Name of Jesus and the IDEA of this all pervading Christ-Consciousness, when invoked by us [the church].

And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church], Which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself]” (Ephesians 1:22-23 Amplified, Classic).

Yet, in all of this, I’ve highlighted the aspects of Jesus that most resonate with me. What does Jesus mean to you?
